EcoCampus provides Universities and Colleges with the practical tools to help them manage and improve their sustainability performance using a management system approach. An independent audit adds reliability to this process, while assuring interested parties and enhancing the institution’s reputation. External audits are undertaken by the EcoCampus team at the Bronze, Silver & Gold Phases and by a UKAS accredited EMS certification body at the Platinum Phases. At the Platinum Phase, a certification body will also audit against the international environmental management standard, ISO14001.

Our audit process

Bronze Phase  

Off-Site Audit (EcoCampus Auditor)

This audit confirms that your university or College conforms to the requirements pf the Bronze (Planning) Phase of EcoCampus and are ready to progress to the Silver Phase.

Silver Phase 

This audit confirms that your University of College conforms to the requirements of the Silver (Implementing) Phase and are ready to progress. The audit is conducted as a one-day on site audit which includes a tour of the site and review of relevant documented information including legal records. 

Gold Phase

This audit confirms that your University or College conforms to the requirements of the Gold (Operating) Phase and are ready to progress to the Platinum Phase and ISO14001:2015. The audit is conducted on-site by EcoCampus. The audit may be conducted over several days depending on the size and complexity of your institution. The audit assesses your EMS up to the Gold Phase of EcoCampus including operational planning and control and emergency response processes.

Platinum Phase

This audit confirms that your University or College conforms to the requirements of the Platinum (Checking) Phase and ISO14001:2015. The audit is conducted on-site by a UKAS accredited certification body. The audit may be conducted over several days depending on the size and complexity of your institution. The audit assesses the environmental management system in its entirety. 

EcoCampus Awards:

An EcoCampus Certificate is awarded for each phase sucessfully achieved. 

Institutions are also added to the EcoCampus register, which lists all current universities and colleges on the scheme and the phase attained.
